Chapter 02

Four front doors

Every cottage opens onto the same lawn, so it feels like a small village with a gate around it. You get your own house, your own bathroom and your own balcony, and you share the pool, the kitchen and the shade.

Tap a roof

Drawn from the air, not to scale. Every door faces the lawn, the pool sits on the sunny side, and the kitchen is the roof everyone ends up under.

The gold dot is you, walking in from the gate.

Frangipani

The one by the gate tree.

First on the left as you walk in, under a frangipani that drops flowers on the step every morning. The lion on the wall is non-negotiable. Everything else, from the fan speed to the blackout curtains, is up to you.

Banana Leaf

The quiet one at the back.

Set furthest from the gate, with banana palms right up against the balcony rail. If you are here to work, or to sleep until ten, this is the one. You hear birds, the pool filter, and not much else.

Coconut

Closest to the pool.

The wraparound balcony catches the last of the sun, and the pool is twenty steps away, which is about as far as anyone wants to walk at four in the afternoon. Good for couples travelling together, or one couple and a lot of books.

The Long House

Three bedrooms, one big sofa.

The biggest of the four, beside the open kitchen, with a living room big enough for everyone to disagree about the film. The swing is right outside the door, which tends to settle where the children are.
